math doesn't suck
winnie cooper from wonder years (ok her real name is danica mckeller - she went to ucla, go bruins!) just came out with a book that tells girls "smart and beautiful is better than dumb and beautiful." while i applaud her message to young girls, i wonder how many ten year olds (the target market for this book) know who winnie cooper is?
personally, i used to suck at math up until seventh grade when i got an awesome teacher. then i sucked a little again in early high school, but got a another awesome teacher for calculus (mr beck ur awesome!) and rocked my calculus AP exam to get a 5. after that however, my math skills deteriorated due to young phd's with heavy accents who i couldn't understand during lecture and didn't care to explain things well. oh well. math came back to bite me in the butt during grad school. lagrangians what?! but it didn't suck too badly.

Teachers really do have so much influence over whether you think you suck at something. I was ahead of the game in math all the up until I got Ms. Campbell for Geometry. A friend's older brother said, "Eww, you got Ms. Campbell? The AIR CONDITIONER is more interesting than Ms. Campbell!" Turned out he was right. It was mostly downhill from there, cuz when you don't have the foundation, future learning's screwed, too. To this day, I consider myself crappy in math. Needless to say, I did not take the AP Calc exam. Haha.
i used to be good in math too...not sure what happened and how i lost it?! good thing T is a math whiz. i just ask him all things math. :) winnie cooper and kevin arnold - such a cute couple. i used loved that show!
well i was thinking, generally asian girls don't fit the stereotype of bad in math since all asians are supposed to be math whizzes right? haha. i think because no matter what gender you are, asian parents will always push you to excel at academics.
i also don't think you really lose math skills. the skills are still there when you really need them :)
and yes i used to looooove kevin and winnie! and that whole young kid romance things is so cute! unfortunately i didn't have that experience since my first bf was not until college.
also, if my future kids wanted to have bf/gf's so early in life, i'm not sure i would approve. little kids know WAY too much these days and it's no longer so innocent!
i love mr. beck. i was such a teacher's pet back then. i have to also say that i had really good luck with good math TAs while at ucla. i don't think i had one single fobby guy who can't speak english. and they were all really cool. i still keep in touch with one of them.
haha, well TA's are a different story. there were some pretty cute TA's in ucla. although i don't keep in touch with any, there was a physics TA that always helped me out who i wouldn't mind keeping in touch with. oh well.
